The town is soon to benefit from the refurbished facilities in the iconic Memorial Hall which will see this facility given new life and Lanark’s arts and cultural scene a wonderful new home.
However, the Trust is currently investigating and examining the possibility of creating a complementary facility which would act as an incubation space for smaller organisations, individuals and clubs with ambitions to grow and develop. There are many organisations which exist in and around Lanark, many under the radar, with ambitions to produce their first stage show or simply invite family and friends to a display of their talents. The town is severely impaired by its ability to offer affordable, practical and appropriate space that can fulfil that type of demand.
During the Trust’s exploration of the situation, we realised any facility would need to be multifunctional and accommodate all kinds of uses. Rehearsal and set-building space isn’t easy to find and a number of groups and organisations currently feel they don’t have a suitable base. Visitor information services could be incorporated alongside heritage information.
A feasibility study is the next sensible step for the Trust to take which we’ll be looking to fund and deliver in the next six months. The Trust has been investigating some of these shining examples of successful Scottish Arts Venues which thrive due to a strong community input.
